A typical shift
Most shifts open with a handover. You read the previous worker's log, pick up anything that needs follow-up, and check the day's diary. Then it is about being present. Some young people want to talk over breakfast. Others need a lift to college or a GP appointment, or help logging into a tenancy account.
Through the day you coordinate with the young person, the senior on duty, and the allocated social worker where the placement plan calls for it. You write case notes as you go. If something significant happens you escalate straight away, with the senior backing you up. Evenings are quieter, mostly cooking, planning the next day, sometimes a check-in conversation about something a young person has been holding back. Sleep-in shifts are paid separately and most are uneventful.
From support worker to team leader
[Placeholder progression story — Michael to provide. Outline: [Name] joined TIFA Life in 2024 as a support worker. Within 18 months, after completing safeguarding modules and shadow-leading a placement transition, they stepped into a team leader role across two of our Swansea houses. Their day now covers rota planning, on-call cover, and mentoring newer staff. Real story, real timeline, real photo to follow.]
